“Lifetime work from home!”
The headlines shouted when COVID hit.
Everyone and their brother – especially tech CEOs – prided themselves on how progressive they had become. No employee would ever need to step into an office again, if they didn’t want to.
Fast forward to today… you already know. Those same bombastic declarations were retracted. Many went all the way to the other extreme – full-time, in-office.
When we founded Quantum in 2015, we decided from day one to combine remote and in-person work. We played with the formula over time, but it was always hybrid.
Because people need balance. They need to be social, creative together, and sometimes it’s just faster to ask that question you need to ask face to face.
And they also need a day or two (or three) to wake up later, skip the commute, and work in their PJs.
It’s really not that complicated. I get that CEOs wanted headlines to appeal to public opinion. But maybe all of us, as managers, could use more humility when experimenting with how we work.
And for everyone else? It’s the oldest advice in the book: don’t believe everything you read on the internet 😊
