If they don’t get it, it’s the design

You know those public bathrooms where the little drawings never quite make sense?

People waving at taps that aren’t touchless.

Trying to guess where the soap comes from.

Peeking into toilet paper dispensers because they’re not sure how to get one.

And then someone just… wrote it.

When we design our product or service, we try to be cool, trendy – dare I say, artistic.

And while I can appreciate the approach, user experience is just as important.

The rule is always this: if the user doesn’t get it, it’s never their fault – it’s the design.

So if you’re designing for people, think about that next time before you draw an icon that seems obvious to you but perhaps not to anyone else.
